BHH Reading

BHH reading is a technique to help readers interact with the text they are

reading. The idea is that when you read you should  think about what is in the

book, what is in your head, and what is in your heart. The BHH framework comes

from the book Disrupting Thinking. This formula is a great approach to creating

responsive readers.

I wanted to apply these principles to the book New Kid which I read with my first

book club. As I read this book and thought about what was in the book, I noticed

several themes that the author was conveying throughout the story. This book is

about a middle school aged boy who goes to a new school, but to a school that is

not in his neighborhood and is also a private school. The author wants me to

experience, through the lens of the main character what challenges he is going

through at his new school. Themes like being new, code switching, the power of

representation, and frienships among other things.

As I thought through many of the happenings in the story, I was mostly suprised

by one of teachers in the book. She came across as not connecting well with some

of the students, specifically the ones who did not look like her. I was also suprised

by her lack of interest in Jordan's drawings and lack of trying to understand him. I

was surprised because as an educator myself, I want to connect with my students

regardless of what they look like or what their background is. I also noticed that

the author does not shy away from topics of race and how race can often play a role

in the types of interactions people might have with one another.

Through these connections I learned that books are such powerful tools to help

students with real life scenarios and how they can take challenges and help them

be better! New Kid is a great book to read in the classroom with 4th graders and

up. Wonderful discussions/activities can be had related to frienships, race relations,

representation, being new and because of Jordan's amazing artwork this book

can also be used for art.
